What is an Alkaline Water Purifier?

Normal groundwater contains TDS in ample quantities. Therefore, there is a need for purifying groundwater/tap water before using it for human consumption. You have a large number of water purifiers in the market to ensure that you get pure water to drink. Recently, you find alkaline water machines making the headlines in this industry.

What is an alkaline water purifier and how is it different from the others available in the market? Let us explore the concept in brief.

What is alkaline water?

Any chemistry student will tell you that liquids have a pH value in the range of 0 to 14 with 7 being the neutral figure. Scientifically, pH value stands for ‘potential of hydrogen’. The thumb rule is higher the pH value, lesser is the number of free hydrogen ions. A liquid with pH value less than 7 is acidic whereas a value over 7 makes it alkaline. Normally, water is a neutral compound.

Hence, alkaline water is water that has a pH value greater than 7.

How do the alkaline water machines work?

The principal objective of the alkaline water machine is to transform the pH value of tap water and optimize it to suit our body. These machines filter as well as alter the pH balance of tap water. They use simple activated carbon filters for eliminating the impurities and pollutants.

These machines employ the method of electrolysis to alter the pH balance of tap water. This electrolysis process separates the oxygen and hydrogen ions from the water. At the end of the process, you get two separate streams of water. One is alkaline water for drinking and the other is oxidized water for miscellaneous use like cleaning etc.

What are the different types of alkaline water machines available?

There are three types of alkaline water purifiers in the market.

1.     Alkaline water ionizing machines

The ionizing machines filter as well as change the pH value of tap water using the process of electrolysis. These machines are available in two categories.

  • Countertop models – You place such machines in the counter just beside your kitchen faucet.
  • Under cabinet models – These units cost more than the countertop. You place them below the kitchen sink.

The fluctuations in the prices of these machines are based on the number of plates used in the machines. The more plates you have, the higher is the cost.

2.     Reverse Osmosis

This is a different kind of machine as compared to the water ionizers. This system envisages the water to pass through ultra-fine filters or semipermeable membranes. Each filter has a specific job of removing trace minerals, sediments, and other contaminants. You have separate filters to remove minerals like calcium and magnesium. Thus, you get pure alkaline water.

3.     Alkaline water filter pitchers

This portable water purifier is capable of alkalizing your drinking water. These simple filters do not need to connect to your sink. They do not have adjustable pH levels of water. Since these machines are portable ones, the water-holding capacity would be between 10 glasses to around 15 litres.

Alkaline water has the capacity to neutralize the free radicals in the body because of their antioxidant properties. They offer better hydration as compared to normal water. You need alkaline water to balance the excess acidity in your stomach. Hence, these machines have become very popular today.
